About 200,000 reports of crime are received by the Greater Manchester Police annually, with certain locations of the city center being identified as specific hotspots for crime. You undoubtedly have a few locations in mind if you visit or live in Manchester. However, you can be more susceptible to crime if this is your first time visiting this magnificent city. Our business at Churchill Support Services is safety and security. In light of this, we have examined the crime data and created a list of Manchester’s crime hotspots. Of course, there’s much more to these neighborhoods than just crime, but while you’re out and about in the city center, it pays to be alert and take extra safety measures.
Top Crime Hotspots in Manchester
Commercial District
The commercial district, which encompasses the Arndale Centre, King Street, and Deansgate sectors, serves as the center of commerce and shopping in Manchester. However, the significant foot traffic and upscale establishments also draw criminal activity. In fact, in the Manchester city center during the 2018–19 year, the Commercial District recorded the most crimes, with a staggering 805 violent occurrences, 258 burglaries, 4,469 thefts, 319 robberies, and 228 public order offenses. There were also horrifying reports of 21 attempted killings in the neighborhood.
Northern Quarter
Known for its trendy pubs, eateries, and shops, the Northern Quarter in Manchester is a popular destination, but it has a dark side: in 2019, there were more recorded burglaries in the Northern Quarter than anywhere else in the city center, with an average of one burglary every three days. It is imperative for individuals and companies in this area to take care to safeguard their property and valuables, as there have been 71 cases of robbery and 885 incidences of theft.
Gay Village
Manchester’s Gay Village is well-known for its exciting nightlife and is frequently chosen as the destination for a night out because of its clubs, pubs, and eateries. Unfortunately, it’s also a hotbed for crime in the city, particularly violent and sexual assault crimes. There were 481 reports of violent crimes in the Gay Village region in 2018/2019 alone. The charges ranged from common assault to the most serious categories.
Piccadilly Gardens
This region, which was once supposed to be Manchester’s green space, has a terrible reputation for crime and disruptive conduct. With 90 occurrences of affray (group fighting in a public place) in 2019—more than any other place in the city—the area appears to be a magnet for gang violence. Over a 12-month period, there were 484 violent occurrences that occurred at Piccadilly Gardens, making it a hotspot for violent crime and assaults. It is advisable to avoid Piccadilly Gardens at night and while you are alone.
Chinatown
Manchester City Council hired professional security to assist in patrolling this area of Manchester, which is arguably the worst hotspot on our list for antisocial behaviour. The council’s plan to combat violent crime, antisocial conduct, and drug dealing—all of which have been hurting locals and business owners for years—included this action. Within a year, Chinatown experienced 132 violent incidents, 40 burglaries, 394 thefts, 63 robberies, and 56 public order offences.
Castlefield
Despite having a lower crime rate than some of the other regions we’ve discussed, Castlefield is one of the few predominantly residential areas to be included in our list of the areas with the highest crime rates. In the area in 2019, there were 101 violent events, 318 theft complaints, 38 robbery reports, and 40 burglary reports. A “buddy” system was instituted by the locals as a means of reducing their anxiety of being mugged after a string of incidents that left them strolling to and from work.
